USA and Turkey

Relation between the USA and Turkey is a broad subject, can be observed even back to the Ottoman era: trade, culture, diplomacy, partnership in foreign and military policy, common sense in the regional issues, world of Islam, world of Turks, Mediterranean edge of the African continent and even relations with the Europe.

I usually take the modern USA’s beginning in the history from the Campo Formio Treaty or the end of Venice Republic. I think the USA officials shares some near idea as Maison de Talleyrand in Paris is been restored by the State Department.

The absence of Venice, dominion of the former  “middle” of the Earth is undoubtedly an important moment in the history. As American continent used to be a subject of quarrel between the newly emerged Nation State countries in the European Continent in the 18th and 19th century.

A federal state, with its relation with Europe and its boundlessness from the European Middle Age inheritances provided maybe a more comfortable navigation, a broader look to the Earth especially with the assistance of English, German, French and Eastern European contributions in development.

A federal state, with an important emphasis on the improvement of the judiciary as a component of law and politics, constitution and the human rights, and also skilful immigration policies to integrate refugees as a component in politics and many other parts served a hopeful example and took the attention of the world to the importance of political and judicial institutions and also released -to a certain point- the tensions of which the Europe had to endure whereas the USA's relation with Europe also formed its responsibilities in the foreign issues and components of its policies.

I have my own ideas on education and universities I strictly didn't like the education system applied in the American schools and relevant publications but this also been an important fact for the USA, especially for the people who acquired wealth in the countries under development and those who want to educate their younger generations in integrity with the contemporary age and it easily took the attention of Turks for a view of the Western ideal, yet comprehension of the Europe was already more complex and difficult anyway.

Nevertheless, two World Wars are not very well studied in Turkey. First World War, in general, also consists of the American continent as well as the African and some of the Asian continent. The Great Game between Russia and the United Kingdom was also another fragment of 'hegemony' on the Asia or The Britain Empire expanding from Asia to the Pacific Ocean, France under Napoleon were all a search for a world hegemony but more important in return an evolution maintained in the centre of the each figures even when their hegemony ended, to say it shortly.

World War II also was consisting the African Continent, which is not much discussed. And yet the tasks of US interventions was much depended on the unresolved disputes of the past than imperialism or hegemony.

US - Turkey relations is actually a different fragment for the history, and a difficult one to evaluate: Turkey's relation with its European ideals in terms of democracy and culture is an another important side but countries such as the USA who are ambitious for an integration with the rest of the world would be better assisted by another -maybe smaller or minimal- countries which would provide a framework to its policies at the gate of different roads, Turkey was quite a proper example for this.

As I mentioned above the US-Turkey relations was a unique thing because its institutions was actually rational for maintaining relations with countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany and France but only with Turkey, but specifically with a democratic Turkey: the US institutions could 'update' itself for relations with other countries in the East or the Asia, which would end up provide a great variety of experience and confidence to the US as well as to its democratic institutions.

Yet it was in 2010 when first officially the USA became a member of the Venice Commission it was also when a new beginning was on the way by the public for a demand of democracy in Turkey. it is a broad subject but I’ll only summarise that in Turkey a highly fetishist support for the USA has surpassed all of the possible opportunities of the Turkish democracy to maintain an accord with the US whereas either Hizmet movement didn't hesitate to show US for the responsible of their so-called causes or the journalists who presented themselves as being US specialists wouldn't be very much accepted when I see their counterparts in some other countries, on the other side: US - Turkey relations, strategic alliance or partnership had missed many opportunities.

'Democracy through law' was already an important notion for the US constitutionalism and the US Supreme Court.
